Decals and stickers get added to vehicles for many reasons. There was a time that decals were used in place of chrome for trim. Bumper stickers may have had a meaning for a previous owner, but may have a message that you do not want to send to the rest of the world as you drive a car. Here are some tips for decal removal.

One of the easiest ways to remove a decal from a vehicle is to use a heat gun to melt the adhesive. If you do not have a heat gun, try turning the car so that the sun shines on that side of the vehicle or even try using a hair drier. These methods will take longer than the heat gun, but will work to melt the adhesive.

When the adhesive has been warmed you will want to use a soft scraper that can lift the edge of the decal without scratching the paint. An old credit card or a a plastic putty knife are good choices. If you feel confident using it, some people have great success with a single edge razor blade. Just be careful that you are only lifting the decal.

Once you are under the decal continue to lift it off of the paint, adding more heat whenever necessary to continue the lifting process. If the decal tears or you lose your edge, keep heating and lifting until you are able to completely remove it. Eventually, you should be able to remove the entire decal from the vehicle.

For pinstripes, there is a tool made by 3M and others called a “stripe off” tool. The tool looks like a large eraser and is powered by a drill motor. It erases the pinstripe from the surface of the paint and can also be used for other small stickers.

After removing the decal from your vehicle, you may find that a sticky residue is left to be removed. If that residue is left on the vehicle, it will become very unsightly as dust and dirt adhere to it.

Several solvents can be used to remove the sticky residue. Try some of the suggestions to see if they work for your residue. You should use solvents in a place that has plenty of ventilation. Fumes from solvents can cause many problems including brain damage or death if inhaled.

The solvents, in no particular order, include, WD-40, Alcohol and dish washing soap, lighter fluid or even lacquer thinner. Do not allow any of these solvents to remain on the finish of your vehicle for an extended period of time. Give them a few minutes to work, then wipe dry before they have a chance to damage the harder clear coat of the vehicle.

Decals have a tenancy to protect the paint they cover. This may cause them to appear to be brighter and have more shine than the area around them. Waxing the vehicle can help to make the shiny spots less noticeable.

Some decals on older vehicles are almost impossible to remove. They may have to be ground off the vehicle and the vehicle be repainted to get rid of the decal. Be sure that you follow the correct steps including primer to refinish the vehicle.
