If you are moving from state to state you may be taking your vehicle along with you. If you do not want to drive it to its final destination you may want to think about shipping. In this case you need to figure out how to do this with as little worry as possible. There are a number of things you need to keep in mind and be aware of before you make a decision on which shipping company to use.
Before choosing a company, shop around for the best rate. You can call several different companies and ask for their shipping rates. You should be able to provide them with some simple information like pick-up location and final destination. The make and model of the vehicle in question, how soon you need it delivered and what kind of service you are in need of. You can choose either immediate door to door service or terminal drop off and pick up.
Depending on the shipping company you choose will determine what kind of payment processes you will undergo. Some companies only expect payment upon delivery, while others require a deposit. In this case you would make the initial payment when placing your shipment order and the rest of the charges have to be made upon pickup of vehicle. Shipping companies prefer to deal with cash or cashier’s checks. If you choose to pay with a credit card you will most likely incur a fee.
Before you sign the contract with the shipping company you have chosen, always read the fine print. Employees may sometimes promise things that are not deliverable. In order to hold your company of choice responsible you need to actually have that promise in writing.
You can usually add a clause regarding pick up or delivery expectations. If you have made a deposit with the shipping company and have agreed on a pick up date, than that promise should be kept. If the company does not pick up with the specified period ask that you retract on your agreement without any cancellation fee.
Make sure your car is insurance against theft or damage. Talk to your own insurance agent about how your car is ensured during shipment. Also ask for a duplicate copy of the shipping company’s insurance policy. Ask if their insurance is primary or secondary to your own insurance company.
Personal items left in the car are primarily not covered if lost or stolen. Do not pack your trunk with a lot of items that weigh the car down. Damages down to the underbody of your vehicle during transport are not covered by the shipping company either.
When the representatives from the company come to pick your car off, or you drop it off, make sure an initial inspection is made of the car. Get a written report on its condition. When it is time to pick it up at its final destination make sure it is in the same condition as you handed it over.
Always check with the Better Business Bureau in your area about the nationwide automobile shipping company you are interested in. It is important to ask for references and possibly verify them as well. This allows for a troublesome free experience.
