Transponder keys are fast becoming quite common for use in newer automobiles. Also called chip keys, these gizmos significantly improve a car’s security. Firstly, they’re difficult to copy or replicate. Also, a car that uses one of these keys is very hard for a thief to steal.

They work like this. Transponders are electronic units built to transmit and respond to electric impulses. They do this in a wireless fashion, like a wireless computer modem. The technology has been around for almost eighty years, but new applications continue to be found. First used by World War 2 pilots to send coded signals to ground radar, this made it possible to announce their status as a friend rather than an enemy.

They’re still used today in aircraft around the world and are responsible for allowing radar operators in airport control towers to know who’s flying in their skies, where they’re heading and at what altitude. They send a unique signal to the radar equipment that shows up as a little icon on the screen, making an air traffic controller’s job manageable.

There are numerous other applications for transponder technology. If you’ve ever driven on a toll road and noticed that some cars don’t stop at the booth to pay a fee like everyone else, here’s why. These are probably daily commuters and they’ve has a transponder installed on their vehicle, allowing each of their trips to be counted by the computer in the toll plaza.

If you own a cell phone, you already have a transponder. Cell phones are required to have these devices built in. That way, if a call is ever made to 9-1-1 from that phone, its location can be easily traced. This can, in some cases, be a lifesaver. Mountain climbers and backpackers might also use one of these gadgets for use in case they get in some kind of trouble and require assistance.

A more recent application of this technology is in car ignition systems. A key containing a small computer chip is designed to start a particular automobile if and only if the signal it emits matches the signal put out by the car’s computer system. These keys don’t require batteries, as they are powered by the signal they receive from the vehicle. If the signals of the key and the computer don’t match, the car won’t start. It’s as simple as that.

Transponder keys are a great security feature to have on a car. No longer is the would-be car thief able to hot wire the ignition wires or force the ignition cylinder to start the car and drive away. Cars protected in this way will just refuse to go.
