It is almost impossible to go through life without seeing not less than one tow truck when there’s an accident. They have been a major need to the car since its creation almost 100 years ago and persist to play a vital role today. They are known in various names, a tow’er, a recovery truck, but it all boils down down to the same thing; you can’t move a wrecked car without one, whether from a small towing company or a garage.
This truck was created for towing one or more cars. Everytime there is an crash or a damaged vehicle, this truck is the one that is called to shift them away to their mechanics or even a wrecked yard if the damage totals the car. They are used constantly by law enforcement to haul cars away that are breaking some traffic code, or even a parking violation.
Ernest Holmes, who lived in Tennessee is credited with creating the first tow truck. He was out assisting a buddy who had wrecked his vehicle and after several hours of pulling the friend’s car out of the river he began to think about how he can use this to his benefit. He already had a repair shop, and many cars were becoming more well-known, and realized he needed a way to tow those vehicles to his workshop when they couldn’t be powered on their own.
So after a little experimenting and thinking, went ahead and used a 1913 Cadillac to use as his base. Using three poles and a pulley, he invented the first ever tow truck. He promptly made sure he patented it and then started the first towing company ever.
For Holmes, this was an instant success; he created something which became known worldwide in just a few years. Its growth was so great that he designed the W-45 to be used during WW2 as a supply and delivery truck, the most famous truck. It moved between Normandy and Belgium during that time.
Besides being used in the war, it’s also used to recover vehicles that were stranded or immobile up until 1973, the French army was still using it. Because of their amazing capability, it had the strength to pull up to fifteen tons. You can come across this and quite a few of his previous trucks on display at the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame Museum in Chattanooga today.
Holmes operated his enterprise until his death it was then appointed on to one of his sons, Ernest Holmes Jr. He then ran the company until he retired in 1973 and therefore the Dover Corp. took over. It was during this period, Century Wreckers was created by a man of the Holmes family. That became major opposition for the Dover Corp. Because of the hydraulics shared in the Century Wreckers trucks. Finally, Miller industries purchased both these companies.
These trucks have changed a lot since they were first conceived. The three primary designs at present are the flat bed, hook & chain, wheel lift.
The methodology that began it all and is still done at present is the chain and hook. Basically, this is when a hook or a chain is put close to the axle or frame of a car to haul it. Scratches and problems can be induced by this method, however it is a good way for automobiles that are missing wheels in the front or back.
Most businesses tend to work with the wheel-lift method now. It is faster and causes less scratches to automobiles; Using a metal yoke, it is hooked under the front or back of the car and then it can be pull in to the air pneumatically or hydraulically to be towed.
For cars that are still usable, even if just barely, a flat bed truck, or rollback, is implemented. They have a bed that is moved by controls to form a ram, enabling someone to then drive the automobile right up onto the truck to get it transported.
Watching a tow truck while on the move is a part of daily life today. They are valuable and usually needed. Whether or not you are pleased or not when you see it, while there are automobiles on the road, tow trucks will be around.
