Make sure that you have a lift that will give you enough space to work under your car. It is best if it is a drive through lift. Check to see if there is either a clamp or a flange right on the inlet of the muffler. If you are not able to find any clamp or flange, you will need to change the exhaust pipe as far as to the next connection. If there is a flange or clamp present, check the status of the muffler connections and know if it is still usable.
The two basic types of inlet pipes which you can select are either the hop-over type or the hop-under pipe, which is essentially an intermediate pipe which is able to go all the way to the catalytic converter conjunction. Some flange applications require careful inspections on both ends because you will be cutting with a torch so you need to be careful not to compromise the next connecting flange. Ideally, this is something you’ve either looked at already or had an idea of what you were going to need, so the replacement parts should be already at hand.
Use penetrating oil on the exhaust clamp bolts to loosen them up. Utilizing a ratchet socket, you need to loosen and remove the exhaust clamps from the mufflers and disconnect them from the hangers. After taking the mufflers uses a mallet and hammer the area a bit to loosen up any rust buildup. You then secure your new muffler back and clamp it back up and make sure the hangers are in place.
